This library makes a narrow claim and guards it carefully.
The claim: the individual moving parts the book describes – that the body responds before language arrives, that a feeling is a signal rather than a verdict, that attention can watch its own contents, that an interrupted state seeks resolution – are not inventions. Each corresponds to something measured, replicated to varying degrees, and published in the peer-reviewed record. Real instruments, real measurements, named and dated.
It does not claim the reverse. It never says the framework has been scientifically substantiated. The components are evidenced; their assembly into a single architecture, and the sixty-day protocol built on that assembly, are the framework's own synthesis and remain untested. A study that supports a pillar is never conscripted to prove the building.
Where a finding is contested – and several of the load-bearing ones are – the entry says so, in a numbered note beneath it. The body states what the evidence shows; the note states where the evidence has been challenged. Nothing is buried; the reader who reads only the body is not misled, and the reader who reads the notes gets the full picture.
Ground: the Witness – attention observing its own contents as events rather than as the self. (Home chapter for the empirical account of watching; Ch. 14 and 21 point here.)
The book proposes that there is a capacity to notice a thought, a sensation, or an emotion without being carried off by it – to watch the contents of experience as passing events rather than as instructions that must be obeyed. The Agent need not act on everything that arises.
The book's image is the café you can sit in without being conscripted by every conversation. The library sets beside it the measured construct clinical psychology calls decentering, and asks only whether the capacity the book describes has been operationalised and observed. It has.
A critical review that decomposes decentering into three dissociable processes: meta-awareness (noticing experience as a process), disidentification from internal experience (inner states experienced as separate from the self), and reduced reactivity to thought content. The construct is defined precisely enough to be measured.

Its frame: a research programme within clinical and cognitive psychology, built to specify a mechanism of mindfulness-based interventions. The construct is a measurable capacity, not a stance on what watches.
Across studies, improvements in decentering have been associated with durable change in depression and anxiety, and decentering has been reported to mediate the reduction in emotional distress that follows mindfulness practice.1

Its frame: outcome and process research. The claim is about a measured capacity moving with treatment, not about the metaphysics of an observer.
The evidence substantiates that the capacity exists, can be measured, and moves with clinical improvement. It does not establish the framework's further claims: that this capacity is a distinct architectural element ("the Witness") rather than a process, that it can be trained to the degree the sixty-day protocol assumes, or that decentering is what the protocol's later stages produce. Decentering research also treats the capacity as continuous with mindfulness practice generally; the framework's specific staging is its own.
Ground: completion – an interrupted state holds attention until it resolves. (Home chapter; deferred here from the Corroboration Library, where the ground was correctly left empty because its support is empirical, not lineage.)
The book proposes that the opposite of chronic interference is not peace but completion: that an unfinished conversation, emotion, or prediction quietly occupies attention, and that the mind accumulates such unfinished business not from preference but because completion never arrived. The song switched off before its final note keeps part of you reaching for the ending.
The book's images are the interrupted song and the argument replayed hours later. The library sets beside them the oldest experimental finding on interrupted tasks, and the field-theory account of the tension an unfinished task leaves behind – while marking, more sharply than anywhere else in this volume, exactly which part of that finding has survived and which has not.
In a series of experiments, participants interrupted mid-task recalled the interrupted tasks better than the completed ones. The interpretation, drawn from Kurt Lewin's field theory, was that an intention sets up a state of tension – a quasi-need – that persists until the task is discharged.1

Its frame: Gestalt psychology under Lewin at Berlin. The tension is a theoretical construct about goal-directed intention, not a physiological measurement.
A companion finding: given the opportunity, people spontaneously resume interrupted tasks. A 2025 meta-analysis of both effects found no reliable memory advantage for unfinished tasks, but did confirm a general tendency to resume them – the resumption effect survives where the memory effect does not.2

Its frame: cumulative experimental psychology. The durable claim is about resumption – behaviour drawn back toward an unclosed loop – not about privileged memory.
The resumption literature concerns discrete laboratory tasks – puzzles, anagrams, assembly. It does not establish that emotions, conflicts, or predictions accumulate as "unfinished business" in the same way, nor that a body holds an unresolved physiological state until it "completes." That extension is the framework's synthesis. The evidence gives the mechanism a real seed; it does not grow the whole plant.

The book proposes that before you possessed language, your body was already responding to and reorganising itself around experience – breathing, muscles, heart, attention – and that the mind's story arrives afterwards to explain what the body is already doing. The feeling makes the memory available, rather than the memory creating the feeling.
The book's image is jumping back from the stick on the path before recognising it as a stick. The library sets beside it the established neuroscience of memory systems, in which a large part of what is retained is stored and expressed without conscious recollection at all.
The taxonomy that organises modern memory science: declarative (conscious) memory of facts and events depends on medial temporal lobe structures, while nondeclarative memory – skills, habits, priming, conditioning – is expressed through performance, does not require conscious recollection, and runs on separate neural systems. Much of memory operates without ever becoming a narrative.

Its frame: systems neuroscience and neuropsychology, built on amnesia studies and animal models. It concerns memory architecture, not a theory of the self.
Within nondeclarative memory, classical conditioning and skill learning proceed through circuits – basal ganglia, cerebellum, amygdala depending on the response – that can register and re-express a learned reaction independently of, and often ahead of, conscious knowledge of it.
Reviewed in Squire & Dede (2015); the amygdala's role in conditioned responses is standard in the affective-neuroscience literature.
Its frame: the neurobiology of learning. "The body responds first" is, in these terms, the ordinary operation of nonconscious memory systems.
Procedural and conditioned memory being real does not license every use of "the body remembers." The evidence concerns measurable learning and performance; it does not establish that early pre-verbal experience is stored as retrievable somatic content in the way popular trauma writing often claims, nor that such content is "completed" or "released" by a protocol.1 A procedural-memory citation supports the pillar; it must never be enlisted to prove the framework's integration or its therapeutic mechanism.
Ground: interpretation follows sensation – arousal arrives first; the label the mind assigns shapes the emotion. (Home chapter.)
The book proposes that experience arrives first and meaning follows: two people outside an interview room feel the same quickened heart and altered breathing, and one calls it excitement while the other calls it anxiety. The caption changes the experience – not because it created the body's response, but because the mind is explaining a response already under way.
The book's image is the silent film handed three different scripts. The library sets beside it the classic – and genuinely contested – experimental tradition that made arousal-plus-interpretation a testable proposition.
The proposal that an emotional state is a joint function of physiological arousal and a cognition that labels it. In the study, participants given adrenaline without an explanation for their arousal reportedly took on the emotional colour of a confederate – euphoric or angry – borrowing a caption from the situation.1

Its frame: mid-century social psychology, positioned against the older James–Lange view that bodily change is itself the emotion. It is a cognition-arousal theory, not a claim about a framework.
The prior claim that we do not tremble because we are afraid but are afraid because we tremble – bodily change first, felt emotion after. The two-factor tradition modifies James by inserting the interpretive label between the body and the feeling.

Its frame: nineteenth-century philosophical psychology. Cited as the historical antecedent, not as current evidence.
This is one of the most famous results in the field and also one of the most challenged. Its status is genuinely unsettled (see note), so it is offered as a well-formed and influential hypothesis with partial support, not as a proven mechanism. Even taken at its strongest, it establishes that labelling influences emotional experience under conditions of unexplained arousal; it does not establish that all emotion decomposes cleanly into arousal plus caption, nor that relabelling is a reliable route to changing what one feels.
Ground: emotion as information, not verdict – a feeling is a signal carrying data, to be read rather than obeyed or suppressed. (Home chapter; Ch. 16's "reduced reactivity" also connects to the Witness at Ch. 7.)
The book proposes that a feeling is a dashboard light, not a sentence: emotion carries information about one's state and situation, and the work is to read the signal rather than either suppress it or be commanded by it. The feeling isn't the problem; treating it as a verdict is.
The book's image is the warning light you neither smash nor blindly obey. The library sets beside it the research programme that made "feelings as information" a measurable, and falsifiable, proposition.
The founding demonstration of the feelings-as-information account: people used their current mood as data when judging their life satisfaction – reporting greater well-being on pleasant days – but the effect disappeared when they were led to attribute the mood to an irrelevant source, such as the weather. When the feeling was reattributed, it stopped functioning as evidence.

Its frame: social cognition. Affect is treated as an input to judgement whose influence depends on whether it is taken to be relevant – which is close to, but not identical with, "read the signal."
The account was developed into a broader "feelings-as-information" theory: affective states inform judgement and regulate the style of processing they accompany, their influence rising and falling with their perceived informational value.

Its frame: a maturing theory of affect and cognition. It concerns how feelings inform judgement, not a somatic protocol.
The research concerns how affect informs judgements – of satisfaction, risk, liking. It does not establish the stronger therapeutic claim that learning to read feelings as signals durably reduces their grip, nor that this is what the protocol trains. And "information" in this literature is a functional role in judgement; the framework's richer sense – a feeling as a readable somatic message about an unresolved state – reaches beyond what these studies measured.
Ground: interoception – the sensing of the body's internal state, and its role in feeling and decision. (Home chapter; the framework's named mechanism for how a user knows the protocol is working.)
The book proposes that the body is in continuous conversation with the world – breathing, posture, heartbeat, attention responding to learned patterns before conscious thought has organised an explanation – and that we have spent our lives listening to the commentary instead of the performance. The body registers a difference the mind has not yet admitted.
The book's image is reading the programme notes while missing the symphony. The library sets beside it the neuroscience of interoception – the most directly relevant, and the best-specified, empirical ground in the whole volume, and the one the framework names as the mechanism by which a user knows the work is taking effect.
The influential account locating a re-representation of the body's physiological condition in the anterior insular cortex, and proposing that this interoceptive mapping provides a basis for subjective feelings and self-awareness. The felt sense of one's own bodily state is given a neuroanatomical substrate.

Its frame: systems and affective neuroscience. It is a model of a neural substrate for feeling, offered by its author as a proposal about awareness.
The empirical demonstration that interoception is not one thing but three dissociable dimensions: accuracy (objective performance on heartbeat-detection tasks), sensibility (self-reported subjective interoception), and awareness (metacognitive insight into one's own accuracy). The three came apart in a normative sample.

Its frame: psychophysiology. Its most useful service here is disciplinary: it forces precision about which interoceptive capacity is meant.
The proposal that bodily signals guide decision under uncertainty. In the Iowa Gambling Task, healthy participants began producing anticipatory skin-conductance responses to the risky decks, and shifting toward the safe ones, before they could consciously state which decks were bad.1

Its frame: cognitive neuroscience of decision. "The body knows first" is here an anticipatory physiological signal preceding conscious knowledge.
Interoception being real and measurable does not establish that it can be trained by this protocol, that increased interoceptive awareness is therapeutic in the direction the framework claims, or that the specific sensations the book names track what the science measures. Garfinkel's own finding cuts both ways: because accuracy, sensibility, and awareness dissociate, a person can feel more interoceptively attuned (sensibility) without being more accurate – so a felt sense that "the protocol is working" is not, by itself, evidence that interoceptive accuracy has changed. The framework's use of interoception as the sign that the work is taking effect must reckon with exactly that gap.
Six home chapters carry a worked empirical ground (marked in blue). The rest either point to the home chapter where their component is substantiated, or close honestly with no substantiable claim – because their content is the framework's own structural synthesis, and a synthesis is not the kind of thing a study can confirm. In this volume an empty entry is not a gap but a boundary held: the place where the honest answer is "this is the framework's architecture, not an evidenced component."
No substantiable claim. The book's opening move – that there may be far less wrong with you than you have been told – is a reframing and an invitation, not an empirical proposition. It has no study to carry it, and needs none; this is the register speaking, not the evidence.

The formation of early conclusions is touched empirically at Chapter 11 (the body responds and stores before language), but this chapter's specific claim – that a childhood atmosphere becomes an unquestioned background – is developmental narrative, not a measured finding. Pointed forward, not worked.
No substantiable claim of its own. The idea that early conclusions acquire authority they never earned is the framework's account of belief formation. Its nearest evidenced neighbour is nondeclarative memory at Chapter 11; the authority-granting itself is framework synthesis.
No substantiable claim. The internal dialogue of competing conclusions is a descriptive model. It is vivid and useful; it is not a measured mechanism, and this volume does not pretend otherwise.
No substantiable claim, by nature. This chapter names the framework's elements. Naming is an act of construction, not discovery; there is nothing here for a study to confirm or deny, and saying so is itself the point of the empirical register.
Component substantiated elsewhere. The disidentification this chapter turns on – recognising that one is not the watched content – is one of the three measured components of decentering, worked at Chapter 7 (the Witness). The chapter's own drama, the misidentification of the self with its commentary, is framework synthesis built on that component.

The Passenger – coherent functioning with the self out of the way – has a real empirical neighbour in the flow and automaticity literature, but its integration into the framework's architecture is synthesis. The measurable part (skilled, effortless performance) is nondeclarative and procedural, touched at Chapter 11; the framework's reading of it as a named element is its own.
No substantiable claim. The internal-commentary-mistaken-for-the-self is treated as decentering's reduced-reactivity component at Chapter 7. This chapter's own contribution is illustrative, not evidential.

Anticipation acquiring the authority of fact has a real neighbour in predictive-processing accounts of perception, but the book's specific claim is a framework reading. Component substantiated at Chapter 7 – the Witness and Chapter 11 – the body remembers. The past organising the present is nondeclarative memory shaping current perception; observation restoring the present is the decentering capacity. Both worked at their home chapters.
No substantiable claim. How the framework's "Verdict" governs perception – authority granted rather than earned – is the framework's structural model. It is the synthesis this volume is careful never to present as evidenced.

Phenomenological, resting on two worked grounds. The chapter describes what completion feels like from inside; the evidence for both halves is worked at their homes, so nothing new is claimed here.
Component substantiated at Chapter 7 – the Witness. Freedom experienced as reduced reactivity to mental content – noise permitted, compulsion released – is decentering's third measured process. The chapter's account of attention freed as interference recedes rests on that ground.
No substantiable claim. The return to ordinary experience as interference recedes is a description of a hoped-for outcome, not a measured effect. The protocol that would produce it is untested; the chapter is honest about being a description of the destination, and so is this entry.
Component substantiated at Chapter 7 – the Witness. Attention freed for direct experience as less is occupied by unnecessary internal activity is the attentional-regulation correlate of decentering, worked there.
No substantiable claim. The book's true subject – relationship shifting from protection to participation as projection thins – is the framework's culminating synthesis. There is no single study of "meeting a person more nearly as they are"; the nearest evidenced components (reduced reactivity, interoceptive availability) are worked at Chapters 7 and 17. The relational claim itself is the framework's, offered as description, not finding.
No substantiable claim. Appropriateness as response fitted to the actual present, rather than reaction driven by stored pattern, is a normative and framework claim. Its evidenced neighbour is the somatic-marker account of situation-sensitive decision at Chapter 17; the ideal of "the fitting response" is the framework's, not a measured outcome.
No substantiable claim, by nature. "Coherence as original, never achieved, only expressed once unobstructed" is the framework's founding principle. It is an axiom of the system, not a hypothesis; the empirical register's honest response is to name it as such.
Component adjacent at Chapter 11. Trust in direct functioning – acting without continuous supervision – is the skilled-automaticity that nondeclarative memory supports. The chapter's framing of this as a "return of trust" is synthesis; the measurable substrate is procedural, worked at Chapter 11.
No substantiable claim. This widens "ordinary" from a human return to a property of life itself – a philosophical move, not an empirical one. No study is offered because none is apt.
No substantiable claim. A recapitulation of the founding principle (Chapter 24), not a new proposition. Nothing fresh to substantiate; the return is the point.
No substantiable claim. The chapter's insistence that the book asks you to notice, never to believe, is a statement about the framework's method. A method is not evidenced; it is practised. This whole volume is that method applied to its own evidence.
Deferred with the register's lightest touch. The Solar Field – consciousness as continuous with nature – is the framework's most speculative ground. It is offered by the book itself "as an observation, not a conclusion," and this volume holds the same restraint: there is no peer-reviewed evidence for the Solar Field as such, and a procedural-memory or interoception citation must never be conscripted to imply one. Named here, and left honestly unsupported.
No substantiable claim. The reveal that the book was always about relationship is a structural resolution, worked as far as the evidence allows at Chapters 7 and 17 and left as synthesis at Chapter 22. An invitation is not a finding.
